Active Shooter at Temple Israel Prompts Shelter-in-Place Order
On March 12, 2026, there was an active shooter incident at the Temple Israel located in West Bloomfield, Michigan that resulted in a shelter-in-place order for one mile and an unknown condition of the shooter after someone drove an automobile into the Temple Israel's school building and fired multiple shots at security personnel. All children have been evacuated safely, and there are no reported injuries. Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard has stated that all law enforcement jurisdiction is involved with apprehending this individual. The actions carried out by the shooter are being referred to as crimes against the Jewish community by a coalition of statewide Jewish organizations. Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Attorney General Dana Nessel of Michigan, and law enforcement have condemned these acts as being anti-Semitic and any and all Jewish organizations throughout the State of Michigan are in lockdown with increased patrols by State Police around varying places of worship within the State.
